Star Wars fans might be perplexed that Funko Games, the game design subdivision within the well-known pop-culture-license company Funko, is developing a full-fledged Star Wars game. Star Wars: Rivals puts players in command of the Light Side or the Dark Side of the Force by building a squadron of fan-favorite characters from across the Star Wars universe. They will duke it out on iconic, recognizable locations, allowing players to make any dream battle they ever thought of a reality!
The game will offer fast-paced and engaging gameplay, which gets players right into the action for guaranteed fun. A game of Star Wars: Rivals is expected to last for about 20 minutes, a rather short amount of time, but the promised fast-paced action is bound to keep you engaged throughout the game.
Collectibles, Rarity, Booster Packs – Star Wars: Rivals Has It All
We also know that there will be a Star Wars: Rivals Premier Set, which will feature four iconic characters from the Star Wars films and the Clone Wars series. The Light Side of the Force will be represented by Luke Skywalker and Commander Cody, and the Dark Side of the Force will bring Darth Vader himself, who will be backed up by Asajj Ventress.
The Premier Set will feature 14 action cards, 18 tokens and markers, 12 location cards, and a custom Prism Die only found in this set. Visually, the Star Wars: Rivals characters have a slight resemblance to Funko’s iconic Funko Pop figures, which only adds to their collectibility. It also makes the game a little less serious, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing – games are meant to be fun and relaxing, and Star Wars: Rivals certainly has that appeal.
The Premier Set is playable on its own, but nothing is stopping any Star Wars: Rivals player to expand their squadron with new characters from the Light or the Dark sides of the Force. How does one do that – by buying booster packs. Note that the full set of Star Wars: Rivals will include a total of 30 characters and dozens of locations (not just a dozen, but multiple dozens).
Peeking Behind the Funko Curtain Where Star Wars Characters Await
We also have a glimpse of what could be character rarity – some of them will be “hologram characters”, which will come with a “unique and special power”. What exactly will that special power be remains unknown.
In terms of gameplay, what is currently known is that each Star Wars: Rivals character will have three unique action cards, which the players will have to use in order to try and claim a location. We still don’t know whether or not the three-action-card rule applies to hologram characters.
Currently, Star Wars: Rivals doesn’t have an official release date. The official rules are also bound to be released at a later date, so stay tuned!
