Disney Lorcana is not even out, and collectors are going crazy for the upcoming Magic: The Gathering would-be killer. At least several collector sets from the D23 Expo sold in the past months of 2022 and the beginning of 2023 on eBay, fetching prices as big as $10,000 apiece.

Going Crazy for Disney Lorcana Before the Game’s Out

For those who had missed D23 Expo, the only way to grab a collector’s set ahead of the game’s launch has been to buy a copy from another person, and this is precisely what has been happening over the past several months. The Disney Expo 2023 had limited quantities of the Collector Sets, which feature six cards and two pins that were available only at the Ravensburger booth during the event.

With the copies gone, the only way to procure one is by paying a monstrous mark-up to opportunistic eBay sellers instead. The six cards the collector sets contain include Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, Captain Hook, Stitch, Elsa, and Robin Hood. Some of the sets also came with a free card, to name Mickey Mouse Brave Little Tailor, which was also tucked into the eBay copies.

The $10,000 collector sets are not the only record on eBay insofar as prices for such items go. Some of the sets that included the Mickey Mouse promo card were fetching prizes of anything between $11,000 and $12,000, with some individual copies selling for $19,000 in January as well. Earlier in February, a set with the promo card sold for $15,000. The Mickey Mouse card was actually available for free to people who visited the Ravensburger booth at the event.

Sustained Interest in a TCG That Still Has a Lot to Prove

Disney Lorcana is already trending well on collector’s backchannels. This could be part speculative and part genuine interest in what is expected to be an excellent game that will take on Magic: The Gathering and bring a lightweight and appealing theme, leveraging the Disney brand to what the publishers and developers hope to be a massmarket success.

Then again, many of the early purchases could be from loyal fans who do not mind spending a pretty dime to get these precious few copies – or perhaps flip them years from now. Whatever the reason, it’s likely that Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter, which is due to release at GenCon and hit retail stores in August, will benefit from the building up interest in the game, driven by collectors’ appetite for Disney rarities.
