  • War of the Dragon is notably the first-ever board game adaptation of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series, making it a landmark release for fans who have long awaited a tabletop treatment of this scale
  • The game aims to be a true “Wheel of Time-in-a-box” experience, pulling content from all 14 books in the series
  • The Kickstarter also arrives at a bittersweet moment for the fandom, as the Amazon Prime Video adaptation of The Wheel of Time was canceled in May 2025 after three seasons

Dire Wolf has dropped an exciting piece of news over the past few days, launching the Kickstarter campaign for its new game, War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time

Inspired by the Robert Jordan 14-part fantasy epic, which was finished by Brandon Sanderson, whose works also inspired several board games, the title takes on the iconic world and brings it to the tabletop in its fully-fleshed variety.

At the time of reporting, the Kickstarter campaign had amassed $498,059 in funding, out of a $50,000 funding goal, reeling in 2,447 backers, and still having 25 more days to go.

Published by Dire Wolf, and bringing Andy Clautice, the designer of Clank!, alongside designer duo Michael Mihealsick and Ryan Schoon (Tidal, Flotilla, A Place for All My Books), this new wargame has instantly popped on boardgame fans’ radars.

Choose Your Destiny under the Banner of Light or Darkness and Advance the Wheel of Time

Dire Wolf itself has used Kickstarter sparingly and has only launched 3 campaigns in total, not overrelying on public crowdfunding to build some of the hobby’s most memorable games, among which are Dune: Imperium and Dune: Imperium – Uprising, the Clank! Series, and Eternal: Chronicles of the Throne, a not-appreciated-enough fantasy card game that is one of the most compelling card games we have ever tried.

Dire Wolf has promised to see the game draw on the full lore of the 14 books, and the adaptation comes at a particularly painful point for fans – the cancellation of the Prime Video series

Robert Jordan’s fantasy world will come to life in the War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time, where 2-4 players will take on the forces of light and darkness, and wage war across the world, fulfilling ancient prophecies, mustering powerful armies, and ultimately succeeding in saving the world, or breaking the Wheel, as the Dark One wills it.

When it comes to its core mechanics, the game features tableau building, action selection, and area control mechanics, translating the scale of the war onto the tabletop in a satisfying way.

Players will take turns playing cards to take actions that fetch them resources, or new allies, or muster the already recruited armies into action, with a special twist – trying to avoid the same move as your opponent, as it comes with an extra cost, instilling psychological warfare into the game from the start.

Each player will have a personal Wheel, which they can advance, along with five core skills they can choose to work on.

Dire Wolf to Have an Exclusive Edition of Wheel of Time Game – Not Available in Retail

Importantly, players will have two ways to secure a copy. They may either opt for the Dragon Reborn Edition, which will be available at friendly local game stores (FLGS) in 2027, or choose The One Power Edition, which will replace the standees with 40 high-quality miniatures, featuring iconic characters from the Wheel of Time. The latter option is only available as part of the Kickstarter campaign.

A third option, The Last Battle Bundle, will be available for $289 during the Kickstarter campaign, featuring a Component Upgrade Pack, War of the Dragon Card Sleeves, Neoprene Mat, and Map of the Wastelands Art Print.

To fans of the Dire Wolf Dune games, the artwork will be instantly recognizable, and it’s the result of a tandem that has worked with the company for a while now, including artists Clay Brooks, Derek Herring, Kenan Jackson, and Raul Ramos.
