When Henry Cavill said he would quit Netflix’s The Witcher, some fans were disappointed. When Cavill confirmed his involvement with a future Warhammer 40K TV project, other fans were cheerful. As one of the people to both regret and regale in both news, I can confirm that the newly-confirmed deal between Amazon Studios and Games Workshop is a reason to be cheerful.
The Contract Is Now signed in Full
There is a ray of hope in the grim darkness of the 40th millennium and it’s called… well TV. Amazon Studios and Games Workshop have now officially confirmed that a show based on the series is definitely happening. The news is not exactly “new,” but it offers a little more meat on the bone this time around as the pair originally signed a contract in principle to work together in December 2022.
However, the full agreement has been inked, which means that a show is happening. Games Workshop has shared the news in an official website posting, teasing fans where the production efforts should focus first – whether they should try and sort a TV series, perhaps a movie… or perhaps both.
Games Workshop has confirmed that screenwriters are being brought together to make sure that the people narrating Warhammer and presenting it to possibly broader audiences will do so in entertaining and engaging ways and yes, having Cavill on the cast helps.
Cavill will actually be the executive producer of the future products, so whether he appears in the cast is perhaps just a little debatable, although his authentic depiction of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher proves his ability to play fantasy roles, bringing a sort of sobering somberness that passes as hope in the dystopian ever-warring world of Warhammer.
We Won’t See Warhammer TV/Movie for Three Years
Although fantastic news, Games Workshop offers another sobering caveat – TV and movies usually take two to three years to bring anything to the screen. You may be piling on and disparaging Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powers or The Witcher online, but the amount of work put in both productions is not for those who are easily dissuaded from pursuing anything hard.
And, in the case of Warhammer’s screening, whatever it ends up being, even more work will have to be put in to make it live up to a standard that is expected from the millions of fans of the franchise worldwide. Games Workshop recently paid meaty bonuses to its employees, but even though we didn’t get a cut – it feels like we got a bonus in there as well!
