Hasbro and Renegade Game Studios have teamed up to make sure that the 1964-game, Acquire, will be coming back once again. The new product will be revamped to meet gaming standards and the best practices in the industry from over more than 60 years of experience since the original release, albeit some newer editions were available in the 2000s.
Acquire to Be Reimagined in 2023 by Hasbro and Renegade
Released in 1964, the game Acquire allows you to dive into the world of big hotel tycoons. The game lasts about 90 minutes and is played by two to six players. As an owner of a hotel chain, you must invest, merge with other businesses, cash in on shares and expand your empire, through smart deals and hostile takeovers both. Whoever has the most money at the end, is the winner.
After first being published by the company 3M, the strategic game Acquire, had gone through many changes and many editions over the years, including a discontinuation in 2006, before it was brought to us the way that we know it today. It even was released in a computer edition, back in 1980 by Avalon Hill.
Designed by Sid Sackson, who is also very well known for games such as Bazaar and Samarkand, Acquire is back once more, after Renegade Game Studios proudly announced their collaboration with Hasbro to give us the new and polished Acquire. It will be available in game stores worldwide, with an updated rule book, naturally.
Player feedback has been crucial in the design of the new version and there will be some small adjustments made, along with the return of the 9×12 gridded plastic board, plastic tiles, and buildings. Localized editions are also expected to be announced later on. Scott Gaeta, the president of Renegade Game Studios, said in a press release that the company’s team has been working very hard to make this old classic exciting for people of all ages.
Acquire Joins a Long List of Worthwhile Games by Renegade
Acquire will now stand next to Renegade Games’ famous titles like Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid, G.I. JOE, Transformers Deck-Building Game, and award-winning games such as The Search for Planet X, Raiders of the North Sea, and The Fox in the Forest. Hasbro has partnered with Renegade Game Studios ever since 2018 and in October 2022, Axis & Allies, Diplomacy, Robo Rally, and Squad Leader also became part of the Renegade family as Hasbro gave the go-ahead to license the titles to the studio and develop new games set in their franchises.
Acquire was part of 3M until 1976, when the company was sold to Avalon Hill. Just four years later, thanks to Avalon Hill, the Computer Acquire video game was available for Apple II and PET. In 1998, Avalon Hill became part of Hasbro and just two years later the game underwent some more changes and was very soon after that – discontinued. However, it was re-released again in 2016.
