Fans of the Marvel universe who like to play board games rejoice, as publisher Upper Deck Entertainment unveiled “What If…?” This is a new core set for Marvel: Legendary Deck Building Game and will be available in the fall of this year.

Upper Deck Announces “What if…?” Core Set

Marvel’s animated series “What if…?” based on the comic series of the same name and streamed on Disney+ gives fans an interesting new perspective on the popular franchise. Following the establishment of the multiverse in the season one finale of Loki, “What If…?” is an anthology series that explores various different alternative timelines where crucial moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films occur differently.

Now, fans of the franchise will have a new way of experiencing it thanks to the deck-building game core set by the same name that is being released this fall by Upper Deck Entertainment. With its 350 playable cards, the new core is a big expansion for the popular “Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game” which was launched back in 2012.

The introductory set offers up brand-new content, allowing players to easily pick up the game. They will be able to play favorite characters such as Captain Carter, T’Challa Star-Lord, and Party Thor over eight different campaign scenarios unique to this Miniatures game. It allows for a few game modes to be played, such as a head-to-head single match of raw power, or a multi-session campaign for 2 players, where the results from previous games matter a lot!

The game, which is suitable for ages 14 and up, plays for about 30 to 60 minutes per session. The new introductory set includes eight new heroes and four new villains and also arrives with five new villain groups. The set also adds new keywords such as Soulbind and Liberate.

What if…? comes with ready-to-use highly detailed miniature figurines that offer two different ways to play. This allows for hundreds of different combinations and is an excellent point of entry for first-time miniatures players. The full set, according to the official website, includes the following content:

  • A meaty multi-session campaign for 2 players that pivots and turns based on the results of the last session
  • 10 Premium Quality Pre-Painted Miniatures each with TWO ways to play for beginner or advanced play
  • 20 Character Cards (one each for beginner and advanced versions)
  • 18 Object, Terrain, and Bystander tokens
  • 8 Campaign Scenario Cards
  • 6 Double-Sided Thick Map Tiles. No folds!
  • 2 Custom six-sided dice with an icon of The Watcher
  • 2 All-new Powers and Abilities Cards with Marvel Studios What If…? imagery
  • 1 Full-Color HeroClix Core Rulebook (2022 edition)

Marvel Studios What If…? will go on sale in Fall 2023 for a price of $59.99 and it should be noted that the developer has said the contents of the game are still subject to change.
