“Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game” is coming soon, and this is exciting news for any fan of the franchise, and naturally, all of us board game enthusiasts. The world of Star Wars trading card games has remained quiet for a good while now. For several years, there had been no news of any such games, leaving fans wanting for more. This is all about to change, however, with the release of “Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game”, a new competitive PvP experience set in a galaxy far, far away.
The game will be published by Fantasy Flight Games and designed by Caleb Grace. Those of you who are familiar with FFG products might recognize Caleb for such games like “Marvel Champions: The Card Game” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game”. This company-designer duo is a proven success on the market, which already shows great promise for “Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game”.
Another strong plus for the game comes with the fact that Fantasy Flight Games is widely known for creating Star Wars tabletop games – namely “Star Wars: The Card Game” – so it is not as if they were unfamiliar with the franchise already. In fact, ever since its release back in 2012, the game enjoyed what we could best describe as cult following. The game placed one player as commander of the rebel forces and the other as the head of the Galactic Empire. Both players must use their specific decks to either build or sabotage the Death Star.
A Different Kind of Card Game
“Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game” appears to be a different kind of game than its “predecessor”. As we mentioned, it looks to be a competitive PvP game, but not a CCG-style card game that’s built around endless card expansion releases and an ever-expanding set of cards.
Judging by the gorgeous cover box art that Fantasy Flight Games unveiled, it looks to be focused on two-player combat, as hinted by Luke and Darth Vader squaring off against one another with lightsabers drawn.
If we were to examine it a little closer, it appears we just might have ourselves a game where we will be close and personal with our opponent in a deadly lightsaber duel! How exciting will that be! We might even find ourselves playing as either the jedi master Luke Skywalker or the Sith lord Darth Vader!
Obviously, we still don’t know much about “Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game”, and Fantasy Flight Games has made sure to keep things under wraps for the time being. We won’t likely hear more about the game for at least a couple more months. We’ll just have to wait for more teasers and details as the game draws closer to its presumed release in 2023. Unfortunately, no exact details are available yet.
