The War of the Ring board game by Ares Games is about to get another facelift with a new forthcoming edition, Kings & Lords of Middle-earth Limited Edition, due in preorder on Friday, December 1.

Deluxe Edition for Kings & Lords of Middle-earth

The boxed set is a deluxe edition which will contain War of the Ring 2E board game content from both Kings of Middle-earth and Lords of Middle-Earth, both of which are tremendous additions to the core game, and have been welcomed by the community.

Although there is a lot of War of the Ring 2E content to go around, adding depth and strategic value to the game, players may need to decide whether to purchase right now, as there will only be around 2,000 copies available for this facelifted version.

The core price is set at $189.90 plus VAT and taxes, so something that will most likely be geared towards long-standing fans of the game or a newer player who is keen to spend more. The boxed sets won’t be arriving too soon, however, as the expected date is June 2024.

People would be able to register for early access, giving a better idea to Ares Games how many copies would be needed. In an email sent out by the company, Ares Games specifies that it’s not obligatory to make a purchase if you do register for early access, but the company would really appreciate it if you only registered if you are serious about the purchase.

War of the Ring Continues to Thrive and Bring More Players

As to why this new touched-up version has been introduced, Ares Games had the following statement to make:

“When Lords of Middle-earth was originally released in its limited edition more than 10 years ago, it was meant to complement the Collector’s Edition, enabling owners of that version of the game to add to their game the expansion with painted figures.

In 2017, the Anniversary Release was published, and 2000 more people became owners of a War of the Ring limited set. Understandably, for years they have been asking for an opportunity to add Lords as an expansion in a similar format.”

In the meantime, the BoardGameGeek forum dedicated to the board game has seen plenty of positive responses, with players saying that they would certainly be delighted to add this gem to their collection. After all, War of the Ring is one of the longest-standing games in the board games hobby and it continues to give meaningful and satisfying gameplay to fans.

War of the Ring: Second Edition is still in the Top 10 board games of all time at BoardGameGeek, 12 years after its release – a testimony to its exceptional quality. Keen to find more Lord of the Rings-themed games? Check our list of the best Lord of the Rings board games!
