The world of trading card games is filled with excitement and valuable purchases. The latest pricey card to be sold over the weekend was a Pikachu pre-evolution Pichu Pokémon card which sold for $25,800 and marked the highest price tag commanded for this type of card. The card was illustrated by a second-grade student who submitted the card to a contest hosted by Shogakukan, a publishing company in Japan, which hosted the event in 2009.
Rare and Fun Pokémon Cards worth Thousands
The contest allowed entries from kindergarten age through 12th grade, ranking each card within their age groups, with anyone from the eligible cohorts able to submit their artwork of either Arceus or Spikey-Eared Pichu. The event was held as part of the Pokémon movie release, Arceus and the Jewel of Life, which promoted the cinematic instalment in the franchise.
In any event, the card that was drawn and won the contest was sold by PWCC last week, setting a new record. The card is quite valuable as there is no exact information about how many copies of it exist. Usually, the Pokémon company agrees to around 13 to 100 copies of the winning designs were made. The card that sold was deemed to be a Gem Mint 10 condition, which is the closest to “as good as new” that a card may come after 14 years.
Pichu evolution Pikachu has been one of the highest-grossing characters in the Pokémon series, boosting the value of various cards. The beloved character and mascot of the entire Pokémon series are also featured on Pikachu Illustrator, one of the rarest cards in the franchise, which only has 41 copies today, and which sold for $900,000.
A Gem Mint 10 Copy of the card was eventually bought privately for $5.27 million by Logan Paul, a firebrand YouTuber back in 2021. Expensive cards have been making the rounds a lot these days. A Spanish collectors shop just offered a $2 million price tag for a rare Magic: The Gathering Card that has not been released yet.
