The expandable card game by Pine Box Entertainment and an entire cast of established designers, among whom Tom Brow, Robert Croy, and Chris Medico, 7th Sea: City of Five Sails, is going to be heading into retail in September 2023.

The game is also co-designed by Case Kiyonga and Case Lopez, bringing the total number of designers who have worked on the game to five presently. In 7th Sea: City of Five Sails, players will fight for influence and control in the city of Five Sails.

This version is based on the original, which is an RPG title of the same name. The card game is for 2-4 players and it takes anything between 20 and 80 minutes to complete for individuals 12+. 7th Sea is also a bit on the heavy side when it comes to complexity which is the trade-off that you get given how deep and strategic the end product can be.

Each player will be a leader who will have their own allies and lead a crew to explore various locations or fight enemies. There will be the need for no small degree of wits, however, as establishing a foothold in the city of Five Sails’ duplicitous and often bloody politics is no easy undertaking.

Innovative Combat and Plenty of Content in the Box

The game itself has a combat style that is best described as a back-and-forth and the idea here is to emulate a swordfight. Each of the players will also have their own decks where they will be able to draw items, events, and even characters to put into play.

For those of you who want a few exterior factors to have an influence on the game, there is a game deck which represents the citizens of the city who will trigger events. The game itself conducted a successful campaign on Kickstarter raising $82,074 with 789 people pledging support and enjoying a very strong reception among backers.

The base set includes more than 300 cards along with 2 copies of non-unique action faction cards, 40 characters cards, 5 leader cards, 30 city deck cards, 5 locations cards, and so much more. One copy of 7th Sea: Welcome to Five Sails is available for $50 on Kickstarter. No retail price has been shared yet.
