Disney Lorcana’s latest set, Rise of the Floodborn, will be sold via Amazon’s virtual queue system during pre-orders. Furthermore, there will be several limitations put in place while the pre-launch campaign lasts, limiting some buyers significantly. While this may seem baffling and disappointing to some fans, it is not done without a valid reason.
Ravensburger, Lorcana’s publisher, did face major issues on the now critically acclaimed card game’s launch when its website crashed during presales. Granted, it was because of a massive DDOS attack, but it showcased a couple of things: 1) the card game is (and will continue to be) highly sought after, and 2) even an industry giant like Ravensburger is vulnerable to malicious attacks.
Modern Problems Require Modern Solutions
With the virtual queue system, such problems are dismissed, while also addressing the power buyer problem most card games have. With the Rise of the Floodborn’s pre-order, players are only limited to the two Starter Decks and the Booster Display Boxes.
Additionally, only US addresses will be eligible for entry. The queue for pre-ordering started at 9 AM PM, and once closed, players will get an invitation to facilitate their purchase. Note that this will be done at a random principal, so even if you were the first to click the pre-order button, there’s no guarantee you won’t be the last to receive the invitation. If, for whatever reason, you don’t use your invitation within 72 hours, it will be granted to another participant.
Overall, it’s an elegant and effective solution to modern-day problems, like DDOS attacks, overpurchasing, and website overloads. That doesn’t mean it sits quite well with some fans, who claim that the time-sensitive period is rather short, and the random principle at which invitations are given may cause issues when purchasing.
One thing’s for sure – people will be frantically looking at their emails for the much-sought-after pre-purchase confirmation. For anyone who wishes to buy locally, we have some good news – local game stores have had access to the product for days now, and mass retailers are expected to start selling the product within days.
Rise of the Floodborn will feature 200 brand new cards, exciting new archetypes, and two brand new “ready-to-play” Starter Decks (that everybody knows are not ready-to-play at all), which are sure to stir the meta in more ways than one! Be sure to snatch a copy and enjoy a game of Lorcana!
