The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow is perhaps one of the best known board games there is. Published in 2001 by Lui-même among others, the game has quickly become a staple of many genres at the same time. The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow is touted as a great party and deduction game, an awesome bluffing game, and not least – a proper mystery and horror title. All of this is now going to be captured by Netflix, which shared the news on its Twitter page.
The upcoming production will be a movie, as per the Twitter update. The news was quickly picked up by the French audience, which have known the game by its original name, Loups-Garous de Thiercelieux, and seemed excited about the upcoming movie. The Tweet has been displayed 10.6 million, quoted 1,634, liked 38,800 and retweeted 3,864.
In a sense, news about werewolves spread fast. The original game, designed by Philippe des Pallières and Hervé Marly is one of the first to successfully adapt gameplay for large numbers of people, with 8-23 players necessary to actually plat this game. The game reminds of “Mafia” and some of the modern iterations involving werewolves, such as One Night Ultimate Werewolf.
A Game of Townfolk and Werewolf
In The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow, the game’s plot is very familiar. The Ordinary Townsfolk are preparing to have a shuteye as The Fortune Teller, the Little Girl, The Hunter, The Sheriff, and all the rest of the notable members of town set out to discover the werewolves in their midst and kill them before the werewolves eat all the townsfolk.
Special roles and clues are used to help both teams sniff out the enemy and take them for a lynching. The downside is that when a player is lynched – one per round – they are tossed out of the game. However, Netflix’s adaptation will let you enjoy the production without having to close your eyes or fear the pitchfork-and-torch crowd coming for your hide.
Movie and TV series adaptations of board games have not been all that common. Cobalt Knight, a production company, has been making waves by promising to bring interesting tabletop games such as Terra Mystica and Terraforming Mars into TV series and movies.
